AIR FILTER FAQS

Q: How long have these air filters been around?

A: K&N, Challenger's media supplier, has supplied air filters for race cars and other high performace engines for decades.

Q: Do I need to modify my aircraft to install the air filter?

A: No. The filters are a direct replacement to your OEM filter.

Q: Are your filters FAA approved?

A: Yes. The filters are FAA-PMA approved and STC'd which requires a 337 at initial installation.

Q: Will I save money on gas?

A: Yes. Pilots report a .3 to .5 gallon per hour savings. At 100 hours that is a savings of up to 50 gallons of fuel.

Q: How many times can I reclean the air filter?

A: Filters can be cleaned up to 25 times or 2500 hours.

Q: How do I know when to clean the air filter?

A: Filter must be cleaned every calendar year, 100 hours or sooner in dusty conditions.

Q: Can an engine get too much air flow?

A: No. An engine can only take a fixed volume of air depending on it's size. The more restriction in the air intake system, the greater potential for power loss.

Q: Will I see an increase in horsepower?

A: Yes. A typical 2-4 percent increase, depending on the current amount of air restriction in the air intake system.

Q: What about the AD for paper filters?

A: Challenger filters are not subject to the paper filter AD.

Please keep your important paperwork that is in the Ziploc bag with your aircraft logbook. When completing the STC request have your invoice number, where you purchased your filter,

OIL FILTER FAQS

Q:  Will your cleanable oil filter fit my aircraft?

A:  Challenger cleanable oil filters are an exact fit for most aircraft piston engines.  No special tools required.

Q:   Is it necessary to clean the Challenger oil filters at every oil change?

A:  Yes. The primary purpose of the oil filter is to remove contaminants, oil sludge and other combustive particles.  We suggest having the old oil filter contents analyzed after every oil change.

Q:  Will oil temperature affect oil pressure?

A:  Yes.  The thickness or viscosity of oil is directly affected by temperature. As the engine oil temperature increases there will be a proportional drop in oil pressure.

Q:  How does water in my oil react with your cleanable oil filter?

A:  Unlike paper disposable filters that are destroyed by water secretion, Challenger's oil filter use stainless steel mesh that is not affected by moisture.

Q:   Should I change my oil and oil filter when the oil turns black?

A:  Ashless dispersant oils are designed to get dirty so that the engine stays clean. Just how fast the oil turns black depends on many factors including condition of the engine, dirt load of oil filter, oil temperature, normal air mixture, type of fuel and frequency and duration of your flights. Change your oil filter on a calendar or engine time, not according to its color.

Q:  How will increased oil flow affect my engine?

A:  Increased oil flow reduces friction and removes more dirt and sludge that may be trapped inside the engine or engine sump. This is particularly important for engines that run hot, like turbo charged and high performance or aerobatic aircraft.

Q: How do I know what part number to order?

A: You need to know the oil filter part number that you use now. The only difference in our part
number is the CP for Challenger and the -C for cleanable. If you just bought an oil filter adapter,
use the part number that the adapter accepts.

Q: Why are your filters all the same size?

A: We have all the part numbers to save confusion when ordering, but we do not need tall and
short because our filters flow more oil per minute than other filters.

Q: How often do you change the gasket?

A: The continued air worthiness says replace upon condition. There is an extra gasket in every
box. Our distributors sell replacement gaskets, and the part number is CP-623.

A; What is the difference in prices?

A: The price is the same for all the oil filters with exception to the Rotax filter.

Q: Are their safety wire holes?

A: Safety wire attachments 360 degrees.

Q: Are your filters shorter?

A: Yes, 3.31” high.

Q: Does the filter element need replaced?

A: The filter element is replaced at 1250 hours or 5 years whichever comes first.

Q: Are certain part number numbers interchangeable?

A: Yes.
